There are many books and pamphlets available that instruct about the gastric bypass weight loss surgery procedure and teach the basics of surgical preparation. But, as revealed in my weight loss surgery support groups, I discovered most of the members were uninformed about what to expect and do after the surgery, particularly after healing. As a result, a significant number of the members had regained much, if not all, their weight again over time. It was apparent that there existed a distinct need to address the lifestyle changes necessary after healing in order to obtain long-term weight loss success and have a happy life. That is the purpose of my book, Exodus from Obesity; The Guide to Long-Term Success After Weight Loss Surgery.
In my book, I describe what to expect after the surgery. Emphasis is placed on what to do to maintain your weight loss long-term. I also deal with psychological issues such as your changing body image, feelings of sexuality, coping with resentment from fat prejudice, understanding the changes that may take place in your old relationships, and enjoying your new life. For those considering the surgery, I discuss the lifestyle changes you can make right now to get you started. For loved ones, family and friends, I discuss what you can do for to be supportive. I have been a Registered Nurse for over 30 years, and I personally have experienced a weight loss of more than 175 pounds TWICE in my life: once unsuccessfully from "white-knuckle" dieting, and once successfully from weight loss surgery.
I have fought this disease my entire adult life! Being a Registered Nurse and a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, I had read volumes of information about health and disease. After all my other choices were exhausted, I decided to have weight loss surgery. I lost 185 pounds. It is now almost five years later. I have maintained that weight loss and have a happy and healthy life. Since then, I have dedicated my career to helping the morbidly obese through support group presentations, regional seminars and now this book.
I am excited to share my knowledge and experience with you, and I hope you will find my book a valuable resource.
